Tongues, p10, Pray in the Spirit

Starting in verse 14 of 1 Corinthians 14, Paul gives us some more terms for speaking in tongues:

1 Corinthians 14:14 "For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding."

Here, Paul says we can "pray in a tongue", and equates that to "pray with the spirit". We already saw this in verse 2, where Paul said "He who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries." Praying in tongues adds another important element in the believer's prayer life. That is a good thing!

We also see that one may "sing with the spirit", which is clearly, from context, singing in tongues. Can I sing in tongues? Yes! It's in the Word. It's a beautiful thing, both in private and in corporate worship. It would not normally be appropriate to sing in tongues for the congregation, as it is primarily between you and God.

The next two verses tell us that we can bless and give thanks in tongues,
